Part 9

Don't worry; Gameshark is nowhere to be found.
Well actually; you could say I'm kinda cheating.
I'm glad we're at an agreement.
Nugget Bridge is west then north buddy.
Youngsters must seem to like to this place. Then again this trainer class swarms the early game points.
You should know the drill with these Pokemon now. Well, actually you don't because you didn't see Mew deal with them yet. Just spam the good moves like Bubblebeam.
So much for sportsmanship.
Face it; they probably aren't.
I love being right.
Yeah, you can't scare me.
The Specials reference?
Try some Pokemon of various species than a lame one-liner. *Laugh track*
Back when this trainer class wasn't screwed over by the general public. And no GameFreak; calling Gamblers Gamers and making them hobos doesn't solve a whole lot.
Poliwag evolves into quite possibly the best Fighting-type in this game. Poliwrath's stats may not be too great, 85 Attack, 95 Defense and 70 Special, but its better and more balanced than Pokemon like Seaking. The main shine with Poliwrath is that movepool: Surf and Blizzard are staples for Water types, it gets Hypnosis, Body Slam through leveling up, Psychic, Earthquake, and Submission; we can't have everything right? The shining star though is Amnesia, a move I covered on my look on the Slowpoke line. This move will give most Pokemon an edge against the competition in this game and Poliwrath is no exception. The downsides are the Psychic bullseye, the rather average stats, and how it comes late and at low levels. This one would mainly work for expert players.
Tier Score: B-
By now; the outcome will probably be the middle option.
I couldn't resist.

Try the metagame then!
You wouldn't really win any serious competition with those.

No you didn't!
What explains the run option in battle?
This route design is very bothersome.
You asked for it.
Growlithe is the Red exclusive Fire-type. Like with most exclusives though; Ninetales got the best of the bargain, if you want to call being a Fire-type a bargain. Arcanine doesn't really have much going for it other than those stats; which are really solid by the way. The Special stat leaves to be desired but the rest seem very solid and has enough bulk to fall back on. The movepool is very weak with only Flamethrower, Dig, and Body Slam being the diamonds in the rough. The position you get it isn't too bad; it just has to come at a similar time to better Pokemon like Gengar. Only really use Arcanine if you like the stats. Otherwise you're getting another Fire-type. And you know what that means.
Tier Score: C-
I don't think the Gambler's losing streak will end anytime soon.
Vulpix on the other hand can do a few more things. The stats aren't as rich as Arcanine but they're not bad by any means, having 100 Special is quite a treat. It gets Flamethrower, coming off more power and an earlier than Charizard, and it gets the beloved Toxic and Fire Spin combo. Sadly though; you'll need to put up with Vulpix until you get those moves. There are also Pokemon who can use the Toxic + trap move combo and aren't cursed with a type as shitty as Fire. Ninetales is probably one of the few Fire types worth using in the game; I'll at least give it that.
Tier Score: B-
What do you want then? Me to give the prize money to you out of sympathy?
The Pokemon you're using could be a bit better as well.
Too bad I won't need these as much anymore. Dig can already do the job and I can use it as many times as I want.
Then you're class must be shit then.
Does the teacher give you feedback?

Sadly, I'm prepared for a Raticate surprise by now.
Try releasing the Rattata.
Fans: Not enough backstory.
Fans after they give a Pokemon a backstory: Childhood, ruined!

What was the guy expecting? A rant on it already?
Oh no. Guess I'm in peril.
Nah, he must've battled beginners.
Why the fuck did I use Transform?
Can't say I don't deserve to see that move.
Almost the same line as the Fire Gambler. I'm guessing these gamblers were quadruplets.
Remember kids: always ask an adult to replace the Game Boy batteries, insert the cartridge, turn on th..nah fuck it!
Engineers are the Hikers/Swimmers/Bug Catchers of the Electric type. Obviously.
This Magneton can catch players out in FireRed and LeafGreen. Especially those who just had Ivysaur and Alakazam at the time.
What is up with those engineers? I can't even say a regular person looks like this. What's more weird is claiming that spark plug is a compliment.
We get it, electricity is dangerous.
Time to do things the old fashioned way.
Because electric is now an adjective. Shocking would've been groan-inducing but it would've at least had a meaning.
Better pull the plug on my computer then.
Yeah, that's why I gave up on nicknaming my Pokemon.
Rather annoyingly though; he won't rate traded Pokemon.

Hi. How's your twin brother doing?
Too bad the Itemfinder was clunky to use until HeartGold and SoulSilver. Yes, it was bad even in Gen 3.

I won't even bother with lying.
Snorlax no doubt.
This is as dumb as the trade back at the Underground Path. Only less dumb because the Pokemon are closer to being fully evolved.

We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Wouldn't you be curious at this area?
Oh ship, we're going to have a party. Will GameFreak let the player drink some of the booze? No! This isn't a fan hack meaning we'll have to put up with a mute rather than emo brat. And if there was alcohol; the engineers would never let me live it down.
That will humor me then. What's the point of an area in Pokemon if there are no battles?
Stereotypes ahoy!
If this was Final Fantasy 8 would the guy say "Ah! Le whiney bitchy type!"
Join the club; I've got jackets.
Pokemon, friends? Leave the club at once!
Gentlemen will specialize in Pokemon that look like pets.
I'm guessing these were cheap at the pet shop.

Contrary to what the creepypasta writers believe; the Pokemon don't die. Get over it!
I'm only nice to real people and animals.
Relationship problem?
Grumpy gentleman uses a grumpy little shit.
He probably took his ex-wife's Pokemon along with him.
Did he catch on to the glitch then?
Don't worry, I'm going!
Get it yourself you lazy flea!
At least we don't have to see its ugly front sprite.
A man who gets seasick would think a cruise would suck from start to finish.
Cue some of the denser fans arguing about where Hoenn and Sinnoh should be placed on a world map.
Could we possibly see some new Pokemon?

I'm guessing these were from Johto or something?

OK I'm convinced; you're just telling porkies.
Do it yourself you lazy sod.
I love the franchise yeah.
You need a bit more practice young one.
You sucked but my egotistical side is warming up to you.
Sounds like a fair deal. At least you're not whining about something.

Body Slam is awesome. Hyper Beam was also good in this game but you had to use the Game Corner to get it.

That job's done now.

This type of police agent would go on to be a certain dumbass in Platinum and badass in X&Y.
Cue people wanking that Team Rocket should've been battled on the ship.
This area has a ton of trainers with Water-types. *Yawn*
Who the hell uses Strength as a serious move?
Too bad it'll be too good to use as this point.
Did the wife find out about those nights out then?
Why is a muscular sailor using a weedy Horsea?
Shellder is a bit more suitable but I was expecting beefy Pokemon like the Krabby line.
Tentacool at least evolves into something that looks the part of a sailor. Oh yeah; I need to rant on it.
Teantacool is the Zubat of the sea. Complete with the ugly Poison type. Although the Poison type is the only real dud with Tentacruel, and it comes a bit late for a what should be expected for a Water-type. The Special stat is very appetizing, and paired well with that neat Speed stat. It even gets the whole Toxic + Wrap thing to boot. Tentacruel is like Venusaur and Gengar; they manage to bring life to the rather rotten Poison type. Meaning as team member; you could say that Tentacool is rather cool! *Laugh track*
Tier Score: B
*Ironic laughter*
Sorry, I can't hear you. I'm trying to bang my head on a wall.

What did I tell you about those yawns being induced?
At least these sailors seem like cools guys to be around.

How long was that prison sentence again?
No wonder you're using such a young looking Pokemon.
Looking at Mew is beginning to get a bit boring.

Argh! Why are you so stereotypical?
Nice item; although I could go ether way. *Laugh track and clapping dogs*
So many sailors. Imagine Ryo Hazuki on this ship.

That's what happens if you misclick and go with Mega Punch.

Why not, you're awesome?
Rest is a pretty solid healing move if you use it in conjunction with the Poke Flute; something we get later in the game.
Because Pokemon battling now means breaking ice.
Could you use something new? I'm running out of commentary here.
Not a move you use seriously. But the use is still very fun to use.
Just because a different Pokemon has appeared; it doesn't mean I have anything to talk about.

I could just run off.
Oh shit, I could die if I don't act quickly.
I won't be dying anytime soon.
I'm lucky that Metronome test worked like it did.

As opposed to Tentacool.
At least this area is done! I'll hopefully move on to some more interesting areas next part.
